Deadly Earthquake Causes Widespread Destruction In Turkiye And Syria

In the early hours of Monday, Turkiye and neighboring Syria were adversely hit by a deadly earthquake, measuring 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. This is the deadliest earthquake in Turkiye since 1999. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks of varying magnitudes.

The devastating earthquake has already killed over 11,600 people, whereas tens of thousands have been seriously injured. Many more deaths are feared as thousands of people are still trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings.

The earthquake was so intense in magnitude that thousands of buildings were reduced to rubble in the twinkling of an eye. The ensuing aftershocks left the people in terror and shock.

While the rescue efforts are underway, the inclement weather is complicating the situation, and endangering the lives of survivors. The weather is extremely harsh in the affected areas, and snow and rainfall have made rescue operations difficult. As per the reports emanating from the affected region, the snowfall has blocked roads and damaged the communications infrastructure, hence many areas have been rendered inaccessible. Due to severe damage to civic infrastructure, certain affected areas are also facing electricity, gas, and internet outages.

In short, a grave human tragedy is in the making. My heart goes out to the affected families, and the people still buried under the heaps of rubble. Let’s pray for their safety and survival. May Almighty protect them all. Amin!

I also commiserate with our fellow blogger Bahanur, who hails from Turkiye, and is currently working in Japan. I hope and pray that her family and friends are safe back home.

  1. Oh, goodness. That picture is just frightening. How can anybody survive that? I cried every time the evening news comes up with such an image. Wish more people can be saved and wish your friend and family all escaped unscathed.

    • Thanks for your concern. Yeah, death toll has almost reached to 50,000 and hopes for finding more survivors have become faintest. We can only pray for the people who have lost their lives or limbs. Despite all the scientific progress, we human beings are so helpless before the Nature.
      Stay safe dear!

  2. Dear Shahbaz,

Thank you so much for thinking of me. It’s a tough time for my country. I have been receiving devastating news from many cities for three days. I also heard that some of my friends lost their entire families, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Most cities have no rescue teams available. Because roads collapsed, most of them couldn’t reach the epicenter and its neighboring cities. I am afraid of watching the news because the death toll has been rising every hour. Keep us in your prayers 🙏

    • My heartfelt condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones in this natural catastrophe. But, of course, we cannot do anything, except praying for the departed souls and hoping for early rescue of the survivors. May Allah have mercy on all of them. Amin
