Growing old is a natural phenomenon and we cannot stop it. Age definitely takes a toll on the human body. As we grow older, our bodies start wearing down, whereas our metabolism also slows down. The immune system also begins to weaken with advancement in age.
Crossing the year 40 is an important milestone in our life. The post-40 life needs some serious lifestyle adjustments to keep healthy. Our diet is one of the key factors for maintaining good health.
We need to be meticulously choosy in our diet and should prefer healthy foods to fuel our bodies. Some foods which contain high amounts of fat, cholesterol, sugar, and sodium should be avoided, or their intake should be reduced to a minimum. These foods cause blood pressure, diabetes, and heart diseases.
Foods to Avoid:
Red meat is linked with cholesterol, which can cause heart disease and diabetes. It is therefore advisable to reduce the consumption of red meat, particularly beef, to avoid developing complex health issues.
Processed meat is rich in fat, sodium, and nitrate. These elements have a negative effect on our health.
High consumption of processed meat is associated with increased chances of getting blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and stomach cancer.
Fat content in processed meats also causes inflammation that leads to arthritis.
Fast foods are packed with saturated fats, sugar, sodium, and nitrates (preservatives). These ingredients are not good for health, and their excessive intake causes many health complications. They can also cause insulin resistance, which leads to developing diabetes.
The sugar content in fast foods provides no nutrition but increases the chances of obesity. Likewise, unhealthy fats raise the cholesterol level in the body and expose us to heart diseases. Salt causes high blood pressure and nitrate produces cancer.
Carbonated Soft Drinks
These drinks are full of refined sugar and fructose, which can increase insulin levels in the body, thereby exposing us to a higher risk of diabetes and heart attack.
Excessive use of carbonated drinks causes obesity, which is the root cause of many health disorders. Further, the higher intake of sugary drinks also increases cancer risks.
White Flour and White Bread
White bread and white flour are made from refined grains. Hence, these contain a small amount of fiber and a high quantity of refined carbohydrates.
Daily consumption of white bread can increase the level of blood sugar in the body, which leads to gaining weight. Being overweight can cause diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Higher levels of blood sugar also cause inflammation, which can worsen arthritis.
French fries are a greasy food, saturated in oil. This oil accumulates in arteries and causes their blockage. Heated oil can also result in heart disease.
Since french fries are high in calories, our slowing metabolism also faces difficulties in coping with extra calories. These extra calories, therefore, lead to weight gain issues, which is the root cause of many other health complications.
Processed Vegetable Oil
The processed vegetable oil is nothing more than a degraded fat because many essential nutrients get removed during its refining process. This oil, therefore, is not fit for health.
Instead of using processed oil, we should consume raw virgin oil, which has wholesome health effects.
We must be very clear that margarine is neither the butter nor a butter substitute. It is made from vegetable oils, and carries a high amount of trans fats, which can block our arteries. It can disturb the cholesterol level in the body and may trigger heart problems.
So after 40, we should avoid eating margarine, or at least, we must curtail its consumption to stay healthy.
Canned foods lose their nutritional value due to the inclusion of preservatives, artificial flavors, and other unhealthy additives. They lack the crucial fiber and vitamins. Hence, they are not suitable for health and must be avoided when you are over 40.
Fruit juices are not suitable for people over 40 because these juices lack beneficial fiber. Their intake can increase the sugar level, which can have serious complications if you are already a diabetic.
Fruit juice is packed with fructose (sugar), which is responsible for abdominal fat. Abdominal fat is a major cause of diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic disorders.
Post-40 life demands some lifestyle changes to maintain good health. Especially, changing our dietary habits is a prerequisite for healthy living after 40. When we surpass this milestone of life, we can no longer afford to be careless about our diet. Unlike teenagers, we can’t eat certain foods and consume certain drinks. We need to be choosy and take nutritious foods only.
By avoiding the following ten foods after 40, we can keep ourselves in shape and remain healthy.
- Red meat
